How to make children have a healthier diet

Through the course of a child’s lifetime, parents will teach them a variety of things that will help them later in life. And this of course includes on how to have a healthy diet and the best way to accomplish this is by basically setting a good example. At a young age, the child’s mind is like a sponge and they will absorb every bits of knowledge that comes their way. So if the parents can set an example by eating healthily, their children will emulate their actions and follow in the footsteps. It might be a struggle for households that are venturing into this new territory but if they have the patience and persevere, it will definitely be rewarding for both the child and the parents.

There are a number of ways to get your children to have a much healthier diet and as experts have stated it will usually take about four to five times of seeing that particular food before they will try the new food. So when they avoided broccoli the first time around, this does not mean that they will avoid it when it shows up on the dinner table the next time around. Again it is about patience when you are dealing with your child. Play simple games with them, to get them into the habit of eating correctly such as the one that eats the most vegetables can be a superhero for a day. This may sound ridiculous for an adult but which kid would not want to become a superhero and besides it is fostering the habit that is important for them.

If they still refuse to eat the healthier foods, then it is time for you to start emulating as well. Try what the veterinarians do when they are trying to feed medicine to the animals – hide it in the food that they like. We are not asking you to drug your own children but get creative with how you prepare the food for them. For example, with the broccoli example earlier, turn the broccoli into puree and mix it in with the mash potato. Another example is to prepare foods that they are mostly into and expand from there. This basically means that children would prefer to have something sweet as part of their diet and why deny them that satisfaction. Introduce healthy food that will satisfy their sweet tooth such as cherries, corn, strawberries and so on. When you do this you will be sure to have them eating the healthy food in no time at all.

The next time that you take them grocery shopping, let them participate in the decision of choosing the foods. Guide them along so that they know how to differentiate the healthy food from the junk food. You aim is to let them take up the habit of always reaching for the foods that will help them grow strong and not the ones that will make them unhealthy. Also when you are preparing food from scratch make sure that the food are natural and free from coloring and preservatives. It is never too late to start and turn this into a family project so that everyone is living a better life.
