MAC, which is short for Makeup Art Cosmetics originated from Toronto in Canada in 1984 and is today one of the most renowned brands in its segment. The company is owned by the Estée Lauder Companies, which is one of the largest cosmetic giants in the world today. The company was started by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo in Canada and operated there until 1991 when it expanded to the United States in 1991 and after the acquisition, the company would continue to expand to other parts of the world.

It should be noted that MAC’s original target market were the professional make-up artists before it expanded to offer the products to its customers from all walks of life. The Estee Lauder Companies bought the majority of shares in MAC in 1994 and then 4 years later, obtained full ownership of MAC. Today, MAC offers a full range of cosmetics products, skincare and other beauty related services.
One of its latest initiatives which were launched earlier in 2011 was the Wonder Woman makeup collection which is a collaboration effort between Warner Bros. Consumer Products and MAC. This will see the new range of products hitting the stores early in 2012 which will offer the likes of blush, eye shadows, mineral powder, nail polish, lipstick, mascara and lip gloss among others.

The company is actively involved with assisting and the discovery of new makeup artists and one of its initiatives include the MAC Pro Program. Other programs that MAC is involved in are the MAC Cruelty-Free beauty program which practices the prohibition of animal testing and ingredients suppliers for makeup products. The MAC Kids Helping Kids was used to sell greeting cards which are produced by kids with HIV/AIDS. The MAC Aids Fund is a funding program that provide direct services for AIDS victims and those related to them. Funding for this are from various channels where under the MAC Viva Glam campaign, all proceeds of Viva Glam products will be channeled into this fund.

SK-II is one of the most established skin care products today. It is a brand marketed by Procter & Gamble (P & G), one of the world’s leading fast moving consumer goods company. The brand was originally launched in 1980 in Japan and is positioned as one of the premium beauty brands around. The brand was created by a scientist in Japan who upon noticing the soft skins and youthful texture of the women who were working in a Sake production brewery discovered that there might be a relation somehow. Hence, the research went underway and it was then that they discovered the Pitera which is a natural, nutrient rich liquid.

The Japanese branch of a major cosmetics brand Max Factor would then acquire the rights to this and then launched their Max Factor Key with Pitera and then continued to expand it to Max Factor SK-II. The brand then suffered a major setback after Max Factor went through a few stages of changes in ownership and it was only when A G Lafley was given the task to overhaul the declining business of P & G in Japan. He repositioned the Max Factor brand and decided to push the SK-II cream. This was a huge success and in 5 years, it would become the top premium cosmetics brand in Japan which have been previously held by Shiseido. Today, SK-II is known around the world as Max Factor SK-II or simply as SK-II depending on the market it is being sold in.

The SK-II product is a popular choice among women because of the fact that it produces results which makes the skin appear lighter and fairer. Hence, they are able to charge a premium price for its products. However, the company is careful to ensure that its customers are aware of how to apply the cream and its implications although there has not been any reports of side effects. It must be noted that skin care suitability varies from each individual which means that it might not be suitable for all skin types. Thus, it is common that SK-II are sold on counters where beauty advisers are ever ready to explain the directions and how to use the cream as well as whether the particular skin type is suitable.

Tan Sri Rafidah binti Jubur Aziz is widely regarded as one of the strongest Malaysian woman today. She is an active politician who is the Member of Parliament of Kuala Kangsar and has been serving the constituency since 1986. Kuala Kangsar in Perak is the place where Rafidah was born and she was most prominent when she was the Minister of International Trade and Industry where she held the ministerial post from 1987 to 2008 which earned her the title ‘Iron Lady of Malaysia’.
As a Minister, Rafidah was known for her hard and strict ways in managing her team and staff. It was said that she was like a discipline master of a school and that there would be consequences if her instructions are not followed. Rafidah was also the former Wanita chief of Umno before she lost to the current chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in 2009 which pretty signified her move away from active politics.

Rafidah was accused of corruption in 2006 in issuance of the AP (Approve Permits) issue for the import of foreign vehicles into Malaysia, allegations which she had denied ever since. The former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, of whom Rafidah said to treat like ‘her father’ even criticized the government for retaining her as the Minister then. It seems that it was already written then when Rafidah was dropped from the cabinet by the then prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi 2 years later where she now holds only the MP post.

Despite the accusations which were neither validated or verified, Rafidah remains as one of the most prominent leaders of Malaysia for her ability to have a loud and strong voice for women in the administration which are predominantly men and to date, there has not been any women politician who could exude such confidence and strength from either side of the political divide.

Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya is a Malaysian millionaire entrepreneur whose life would inspire many Malaysians today. Her story was a typical rags-to-riches tale which involved her working extremely hard to become one of the most prominent businesswomen of Malaysia. She however met with a tragic end when she was murdered where the case is still currently on trial.
Datuk Sosilawati was born in Batu Pahat in Johor where together with her 13 siblings had to endure some hard times in their childhood that included rubber tapping to help with the income of the family. She was also working as a door-to-door sales person to try and sell cosmetic products and when she saved enough money, she started Nouvelle Beauty Centre Sdn Bhd. The 13 years of savings would allow her to establish the NV (Nouvelles Visages) range of beauty products and this would continue to grow and today is one of the most known cosmetics brands in the region.

In 10 years, the brand would expand to other countries like Brunei, Singapore and Thailand where it would have a network of 300 stores and stockists including Malaysia. The total asset of the company was valued at RM6.37 million where she would manage it with her daughter Erni Dekritawati Yuliana Buhari.

As an entrepreneur, she was recognized by the Johor state when she was conferred the “Wanita Nadi Negara’ award and in managing such a large business empire, she became one of the best success stories of Malaysian women today. She is still being held in the highest regards among Malaysians today for her ability to come out of poverty and become one of the most successful business entrepreneurs of Malaysia. However, tragedy was to befall her when she was brutally murdered when her body and 3 others were discovered said to be over some dispute of a land sale.

You would be too familiar with The Body Shop because that is where you will usually buy your cosmetics and toiletries which are environmental friendly. There would always be campaigns like AIDS awareness, child sex trafficking and very prominently, environmental issues that would be promoted at the Body Shop outlets located all over Malaysia.

But do you know who is behind bringing such campaigns to you through the shopping experience while making sure that you know what is going out in the world today? That would none other than Datin Mina Cheah-Foong, the Managing director of Rampai Niaga Sdn Bhd which manages the beauty chain. In fact, Datin Mina is keen to use the Body Shop chain as the platform to promote such issues because it is not often that businesses are able to do that.

She call the Body Shop brand as ‘weapons of mass instructions’ since they have stores in every state in Peninsular Malaysia except in Perlis. What better ways to reach out to the Malaysian public and women but through what they need and then educating them? The company holds the franchise for the Body Shop and the fact that it is privately owned company makes it easier for them to push the cause to the Malaysian public. One might perceive that the messages of environmental friendliness and such would be globally initiated but Datin Mina has ensured that the Malaysian issues are also looked into.

The Body Shop had in 2006 worked with the MNS (Malaysian Nature Society) in promoting and raising awareness to gazette the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex in Perak which was known to be older than the likes of the Amazon and Congo basins where it has one of the richest biodiversity areas globally. Apart from that, Datin Mina was also regarded as one of the pioneers of the ‘No Plastic Bag’ efforts when they launched the ‘Kick the Bag Habit’ initiative.
